Update: US government easily tracking your crytocurrency transactions (thanks Coinbase!)

Coinbase sells to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement a range of features that allow the agency’s Homeland Security Investigations division to track and identify crypto users.

  • In August 2021, Coinbase sold a single analytics program license to ICE for $ 29,000.
  • followed by a software purchase potentially worth $ 1.36 million next month

A new contract document obtained … shows that ICE now has access to various forensic functions provided by Coinbase Tracer, the company’s intelligence collection tool (formerly known as Coinbase Analytics).

  • Coinbase Tracer allows customers, both in government and in the private sector, to track transactions through the blockchain

  • Tracker (has the) … ability to “investigate illegal activities including money laundering and terrorist financing” and “connect [cryptocurrency] addresses to real entities. “
